Are you a 5 or a 10?

Last night one of the TV channels here in the UK showed the 2010 film “Out of my League”.

I hadn’t managed to see it before and since it was time for me to put my feet up and relax, I decided to watch it.

While I found the film very funny and entertaining it also struck me that there were some surprising insights into success or otherwise in our lives.

If you haven’t seen the film it tells the story of Kirk, a shy retiring type, who works at Pittsburgh airport as a security officer.

He is part of a group of mates who work in different roles at the airport who have a mission to get off with every pretty girl that comes through the airport.

They have a particular scoring system for both themselves and the girls that they come into contact with. The scoring ranges from 1 to 10  with Kirk being rated as a 5 or possibly a 6 at best. One of the interesting parts of the scoring is that they believe you can’t jump more than 2 places on the scale when seeking a relationship with a potential pretty girl.

So when Molly, a definite 10, comes through and becomes very keen on Kirk, his mates, especially Stainer the most dominant and vocal of the group, rush to make it clear to Kirk that this relationship would fail if he pursued it.

After all, he is a 5 or 6  and could only hope to score with a 7 or 8 at best.

The end of the film sees a complete turn round of Kirk’s fortunes as he and Molly become long-term partners.

It becomes apparent during the film that part of Stainers thoughts on the scoring principle is based on the fact that he was dumped by someone who he thought was a perfect 10.

He is persuaded towards the end of the film to approach his ex-girfriend and tell her that he’s still crazy about her and always thought she was a 10 but that he wasn’t and that’s why it didn’t succeed.

She makes a telling point in response to this belief. She tells him that she always thought he was also a 10, the problem was, she said, that he didn’t think he was a ten.

I see comparisons to the theme of this film every day. I see family and friends telling entrepreneurs that they will never achieve success online and to just give up. Quite often there is no malice in their comments. They believe that many of us are not meant to succeed, never meant to step outside of the status quo.

I believe that in many cases this is the result of not feeling at a 10 themselves and don’t feel comfortable with family and friends around them moving ahead.

This constant programming causes devastation to us entrepreneurs. It keeps dragging us down as we struggle to get ahead no matter how hard we try to block it out.

If you’ve ever been the subject of that sort of programming I’m here to tell you that you are already a 10. You’ve taken the step to change your circumstances and that takes a level 10 type of courage.

And as for that rule of not being able to move more than 2 places, forget it. You’re a 10, even though it may not be showing outside, and as soon as you start to believe you’re a 10, things will begin to appear on the outside.

Talking of things starting to happen, the first thing you need to identify is your target market and then come up with a product to sell them.

In the last post I told you about Marlon Sanders new training which covers both of those requirements. Using the principles he teaches in this training, he has managed to stay at the top of his game now for 20 years or more.

Are You Putting The Cart Before The Horse Too?

Hi again,

Trevor here, I hope you’re well.

What an eventful week this has been with what seems to have been a shock result to the US elections.

Many of us here in the UK have been watching the election process with interest. Even though it isn’t our leader who’s being elected the outcome will certainly affect us in many ways.

The world is getting smaller all the time and our lives are becoming increasingly inter-dependent because of it.

I for one will be watching your new President’s progress with interest.

Meanwhile, we’re getting towards winter here in the UK and the cold frosty mornings this last week and the dark mornings and short days tell us that winter will soon be upon us.

It is also the time of year when a lot of business owners start to review how our business has gone this year and what we want to achieve in our business in the coming year.

I’ve started to give it some thought but it’s usually next month that I really get down to planning things.

Talking about planning, I’m still surprised by how many people I talk to about marketing online that don’t plan their businesses at all.

I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said that failing to plan was planning to fail by default and he was absolutely spot on.

I was reminded of this just last weekend. I was in London to meet up with a colleague of mine to plan out a joint venture that we have coming up.

He was in London helping out at a weekend workshop being run by a number of Internet marketers and I agreed to travel down to meet him there.

I arrived at the end of the workshop on Sunday afternoon just as many of the attendees were leaving. As I waited outside the meeting hall for my friend one of the attendees approached me and asked if I had enjoyed the workshop.

He thought I had been attending throughout the weekend like him. I explained that I was just there for a meeting and took the opportunity to ask him about what he was doing online and how things were going.

The conversation that followed was similar to one that so many online marketers have with me, even those that have been online for some time.

It describes why so many people fail to become successful in business whether that’s online or offline.

He said that his business was stuck currently because he needed to create a product and didn’t know what to create.

Does that resonate with you, have you felt like that before? Is that your roadblock right now?

If you are you are certainly not on your own but the fact is that we should never be stuck to come up with a suitable product.

If, and this is the key ingredient that most are missing, If we know our market.

I really wanted to help this guy so I asked him a few questions about his business.

I asked him who his target market was – he said he didn’t know.

I asked him if he had created in his mind an avatar for his ideal customer – he hadn’t.

You see without knowing who he was marketing to he would never be able to discover what their problems were, what their pain points were, what problems any product he created needed to solve.

He was putting the cart before the horse.

I advised him to think seriously about his market. Who did he want to serve, who did he think he was ideally placed to help. How did his experiences from past work or hobbies equip him to provide value to a market.

Once he was able to get his head around that and build a picture of the ideal customer in his mind, then he could think clearly about creating a product that they would be likely to buy from him.

Once we know what our customers are looking for a solution for, selling it to them becomes easy. We don’t have to come up with fancy sales talk to sell to them, we just need to show them that we have the solution to their issues.

The sad thing is my colleague told me that these people had paid $3000 to be there that weekend and at the end of it this guy still had no clue what he was doing.

That made me really sad. Here was somebody that had spent a lot of money, maybe money that he couldn’t really afford to spend, in the hope that this time he was finally going to achieve his dream.

And yet he was still lost, he was still thinking he needed to create a product. The workshop hadn’t even shown him how to go about deciding what product to create let alone shown him that he wasn’t ready to create one.

It’s things like that, people spending their hard earned money to improve their lives, and not being given usable, actionable help that has finally pushed me into deciding to launch my own coaching program early next year.

I’m still gathering feedback and researching my market at the moment and would like to hear from you what’s holding you back.

Stop What You’re Doing

If you’ve been trying to make it online for more than a few months and still not achieved the income level that you wanted to achieve then this could be the light bulb moment for you.

It may upset you, even annoy you but it’s something that I feel compelled to write. There are times when we get an overwhelming push to do something and this is one of those moments for me.

Like I said, I believe this is the most important training I have ever felt the need to give.

Why is that? Because if you are the person I described above, you’ve been online for a few months or maybe years now and have still not “made it”, whatever that is for you, then you need to stop what you’re doing and follow with me through all of this training.

The reason I say that you must stop what you’re doing is because you are clearly doing something wrong and we need to get that sorted.

You’ve probably heard that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing today that you did yesterday and expecting a different result.

Well, sorry to have to be the one to bring it to your attention but that’s where you and thousands of people trying to make money online are.

Now, before you get upset at me I say that with an arm around your shoulder – I’m here to help.

It’s almost certainly not your fault that you find yourself where you are because it’s a result of the false promises that get preached every day online.

It’s a result of the “install this bit of software and push a few buttons and money will fly into your bank account” messages that people like you find yourself where you are.

It’s a result of all of the distractions that you get. It’s the endless WSO’s (Warrior Special Offers), the daily launches on every topic going that you will supposedly fail miserably without.

So you buy this latest thing that you must have or you’ll never make a penny and you still don’t make anything.

And on and on it goes for months and years and as time goes by you get more and more frustrated and in many cases desperate so you try even more things in the hope that this is the one.

Is any of this resonating with you?

I know that there’ll be lots of yes’s to that question because I read emails from people all the time that describe just such a situation.

Feel free to add your thoughts and comments below. Get your frustration off your chest if you want, I’ll listen.

That’s why you must stop now. What you’ve done up to now hasn’t worked and it’s not going to work in the future – right?

Remember doing the same thing and expecting a different result?

It’s time to do something different.

But what?

“Surely, you say, I’ve been trying lots of different things already. Why do you think I’ve been doing that? Because they all promised me a different result that’s why”.

That’s a good point and I understand where you’re coming from. The problem is though that the people selling you these different ways are, in many cases, well meaning but misinformed themselves.

In the main they are only passing on the incorrect training that they’ve been given.

They’ve been taught that to make money online you need to create WSO’s so that’s what they do.

They create one WSO after another and try selling them to you and you buy them because you believe that they will deliver what you came online for.

In reality though, what they are, are distractions.

The reason that we allow those distractions to draw us in is because we don’t have a clearly defined goal, a clear reason for being online in the first place.

The reason that most people are online in the first place is because they typed into Google “How to make money online”.

They had a need to make some money somehow and maybe heard that people on the Internet are getting rich.

From that point on it has been like they are prospecting for gold. Digging here – no gold, trying over there – no gold, trying somewhere else – still no gold.

The only reason we allow those distractions to take our attention is because we don’t have a stronger reason to say no to them.

Let me explain what I mean by that.

Just picture a pet cat out back and a little bird lands on a fence nearby. The cat will spot the bird and creep up on it with all intentions of catching it. It makes a half-hearted attempt to jump up at it but isn’t that bothered when it misses. After all it will be getting its tea in a dish before long like it does every day.

No imagine a bigger cat. It’s the end of the dry season on the Serengeti and you and your cubs haven’t had a decent meal in months. The Wildebeest have just started their migration.

The lioness focuses her attention on a young calf straggling behind and nothing will distract her from bringing down and feeding her cubs.

Despite all of the chaos of the herd around her she stays totally focused because to become distracted means no food for the family.

She is making a deliberate choice to remain focused because the consequences of not doing so are very strong.

Now let’s talk about the online distractions. Do you have a goal as strong as that lioness? No?

Is that why you are where you are after all these weeks, months or even years?

Believe it or not but that example of the lioness holds the key to online success.

I told you at the start of this training to stop what you were doing. The reason I said that was because until you identify clearly at a deep emotional, physical level why you are online at all, doing anything else is a waste of your time, energy and probably money too.

So what’s you reason? You may say it’s to make money, but how much money and by when? And why do you need the money, what’s it for?

Is it so that you can quit a job you can’t stand having to go to every day? Then think about what you would feel like if you had to keep doing that job because of decisions you made.

To achieve your goal of quitting that job you will need to identify how much money you’ll need to generate online.

Then you will need to decide which way, which method you are going to use to make that amount of money.

Then you will need to identify what skills you need to learn or to identify what resources you’ll need to put that plan into action.

Only when you know all of that will you be in a position to make decisions about what you focus on and what are distractions.

Make no mistake about it that every time you allow another WSO, or text message or phone call that doesn’t contribute towards your end goal of quitting that job to drag you away from the tasks you have in hand, you are making a conscious decision to stick with the J.O.B.

It might sound harsh but if you are not prepared to really focus in on why you’re doing this and make a conscious decision to only allow those things that contribute towards achieving your goal to take your attention you would be better off forgetting doing anything online and resign yourself to staying with your current situation.

Having said that I’m not saying that you should become totally obsessed to the point of having no life outside of the Internet and I’m not saying that you will never get distracted.

I get distracted, we all get distracted from time to time. The difference is that once you get a clear picture of why you’re doing this, you’ll know when something is a distraction and be able to handle it.

We all get the same amount of time in our days. The people that become successful quickly, know how to use their time wisely.

Have you noticed someone that has been online a lot less time than you and yet are so far ahead of you? They are already making way more money than you and don’t seem to be any smarter than you are?

It’s all about having a big reason why and focusing on achieving it.

I’ve not done a training session like this before, I hope it gave you some clarity that maybe you didn’t have before.

If you found this training useful I’m working on a new coaching program that I’ll be launching early in the New Year. In order to make that program as beneficial to you as I can make it, it would be really helpful if you let me know what you are having difficulty with in your business. Please leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts.

I also recommend Drive from Sean Mize which is available on Kindle and maybe paperback too.

Until next time,

Kind regards,

Lesson 6 – Which Way Is For You?

In this lesson I want to talk about making money online.

On the face of it, especially if you’re new to the world of Internet Marketing, it may seem like the term ‘making money online’ refers to one thing – one activity.

The reality is very, very different. In this lesson I’m going to dig deeper into that subject and hopefully provide some valuable insights into making money online.

I think a good place to start this discussion is to identify what we mean by the term Internet marketing. Continue reading

Lesson 5 – Your Freedom Figure

In this lesson I want to talk about what I believe to be another of the keys to success online.

It’s what I call your “Freedom Figure”. Actually, I think it was another online marketer, Tony Shepherd, that I first heard describe it but it is such a powerful concept that I want to pass it on to you.

During my years online there’s one thing that I’ve seen over and over again when I read the stories of those that have gone from struggling to success. So much so that I now believe it is the key to moving to the next level of online success. Continue reading

Lesson 4 – Fast Money Vs Slow Money

In this lesson I want to address one of the areas that causes the most disappointment and failure in the online world.

If I asked any of you reading this right now what was the reason that you were here you would say that it’s because you want to make money. Not surprising because we all want to make money online.

However, from my experience of working with my subscribers and coaching clients over many years, it’s not quite as simple and clear-cut as that. Continue reading

Lesson 3 – This Is Why The 1% Succeed – Will You Be One Of Them?

Today I want to talk about the one thing that is responsible
for success or failure at anything – online or offline.

It’s so vitally important to your success and yet it is ignored
or deliberately not spoken about by the majority of business
coaches.

The reason that it is so rarely discussed is, I believe, because
it’s not what the majority of people want to hear about.

It doesn’t sell products, it doesn’t make them lots of money so they
prefer to sell what people think they want.

What is this vitally important ingredient to your success? Continue reading
